Bellots Hospital
In 1590 Queen Elizabeth gave Bath a new charter. From then on Bath had a mayor and aldermen. There were some improvements in the little town. Bellots almshouses were built in 1609. In 1615 a scavenger was appointed to clean the streets. In 1633 thatched roofs were banned because of the risk of fire. It is amazing that this coat of arms on Bellots Hospital has survive all this time even though the building is altered and rebuilt. You can see the coat of arms in the two drawings. The earlier on the left shows the original building. These arms have been repainted many times in its long history. I have cleaned, re-painted and re-guilded them twice, the last time was in 1999 .
