Casting the

First Stone

This life sized figure was carved in yew wood using very rough tools, axes and grinders. I particularly wanted a rough hewn feel to it because of the subject. The story is from the Bible, John 8 . Jesus asks the  question. Is there any one  without sin who will cast the first stone? The figure is set up with a blackboard so that  people can enter into this arena. Are the words to be stones or forgiveness?

 

My workshop was in the red light district of Bristol and this sculpture was a direct result of seeing the young women on the street every day.  There is now  an organisation in the area working for them and the bronze left was made for one of the organisers.
