Roman Baths
Julius Caesar 1990
This Julius Caesar was one of eight life size figures created by George Lawson depicting Roman generals and emperors connected with Britain. Each carved from two pieces of Bath stone, they were finished in 1897,and positioned around the Roman Baths Terrace. This was designed by John Brydon architect in 1892, at the same time as the Concert Hall and the Guildhall art gallery. Julius happily stood in place until one night in 1988. Two drunks toppled him into the Great Bath (see picture left.) With the help of my apprentice Iain Cotton I pieced the figure to together and modelled the parts that were smashed beyond repair and we carved a new stone Caesar. All figures are well secured now.
