My training in stone masonry is invaluable to me. It gave me the skills base to work out of and a love of old buildings I value it as much as any other experience I have ever had.
I am very grateful to the people in the trade and at Bath technical College under George Clayton, who shared their knowledge with me and encouraged a young man to learn some very important lessons.
In particular I was apprenticed under Stan Hancock and Arthur Hulbert who were excelent stone masons.
I was one mason among many working for the Stone Firms Ltd in a large workshop at Neston, near Corsham Wilts. My output as a mason was in the main routine, anonymous, and under the aegis of my employers. I cannot now remember but a fraction of the work I did then. Here are some later projects I can claim title to.
