The west front of Bath Abby, begun  in 1490 was  conserved in 1990 by Nimbus Conservation Ltd. On either side of the great west window are the figures of intercessors including ten Apostles the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist. The photo below shows on the left the original statue carved in Virtue's workshop about 1492. The top was destroyed probably some time in the 1940’s.  My carving in the middle is made of Bath stone, and on the right a plaster cast made during Gilbert Scott’s  1890's restoration. (Bath Abbey casts) I have worked on the Abbey a great deal over the years and on this occasion I spent many weeks researching these figures with the help of Jerry Sampson and  I made many clay studies from the original statues to enable me to get a feeling for the style of the design and carving.
